Chapter Philanthropy

Philanthropy and Service are very important to the Kappa Eta Chapter. We plan different philanthropy events to raise money for various organizations throughout the year. We also participate in many service opportunities both through Phi Mu and for their personal platforms. Each spring semester, Kappa Eta holds a large dodgeball tournament, Dodge-a-Paluza, where multiple teams dip, dive, duck, and dodge all day long to help raise money for national philanthropy Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. This year we were unable to hold our event due to Covid-19, but we were excited to have been able to raise $7,911.40 from this event! All of the money raised at the tournament is donated to CMNH, but kept locally at Children's Hospital in New Orleans. We also try to stay active at Children’s Hospital sending small groups as often as possible to volunteer at the hospital. We do so in our annual Bingo event that is held in the fall. 

      The local philanthropy supported by Kappa Eta is Cystic Fibrosis,  an inherited disease that causes thick, sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive tract. It is one of the most common chronic lung diseases in children and young adults and may result in early death. We chose this philanthropy in honor of chapter alumna Yvette Usea. Yvette was a new member to our chapter when she became overcome by the disease and was placed in the hospital. In order to initiate  Yvette, Kappa Eta approached Phi Mu Nationals, and a wing of the hospital was closed in order that the private initiation could take place. It was one of Yvette's last wishes. Sadly, she succumbed to the disease shortly after.

       Our chapter goal is to raise both awareness and funding for Cystic Fibrosis in honor of Yvette Usea and the thousands that die every year from the disease.  Each year we participate in the local Cystic Fibrosis walk by volunteering and walking/running the race. We also raise funding through various events throughout the year including our giveback nights at various restaurants in our community. 

Kappa Eta also raises money and awareness for various other charities throughout the year in addition to supporting other organizations in their philanthropic pursuits.
